The next few weeks saw a peculiar darkness descend over the household. It was something like a grey mist which flit around, blending in with the monsoon miasma. Paresh, perhaps instinctively feeling that something was amiss, spent more and more time in the office. He was almost afraid of his wife. Nandita spent all her hours in the study, with the door shut. More and more, she lived in a world of her own. Nandita stopped taking care of herself and hardly slept. Her meals were haphazard. Her hair, which had been sleek and fine, became brittle, like dry twigs crushed in the dust. The dark circles which had hitherto been hidden under skilfully applied make-up, reappeared under her eyes. Even when her face was in repose, lines etched their way around her mouth. It was a hollow-eyed face of grief and obsession.
